    Real Estate Sci-Fi
    by Andrew Blachut

No this isn't an article about Virtual Real Estate although that does sound like a really cool topic. No I?ll leave that one for another time.

Neither is it an article about selling condos on an asteroid.

Actually the story I want to tell you would fit better in the fantasy genre instead of the Sci-fi field.

Alas the Sci-Fi title was a little catchier. I also thought that Real Estate Fantasy as a heading, may have given some people the wrong idea. I don't want to be accused of peddling soft porn in the real estate industry.

Anyway back to the Real Estate Science Fiction , er, um, fantasy theme.

Imagine with me for just a moment that you lived in a very strange and bizarre world. A world in which every day that you woke up a whole class of occupation suddenly dematerialised.

    What would that be like?

Imagine just for a second that you woke up tomorrow morning and suddenly there were no more doctors anywhere. What a disaster! Even my wife who isn't a staunch supporter of the medical industry would lament their passing.

The day passes albeit with lots of desperate people wondering how they will go on. You go to bed again, assuming that you survived the lack off doctors and didn't have a car smash that day.

Now you awake again only to find the doctors were all back but we had now lost all the teachers. Maybe if your kids were home schooled, you may not miss a beat, but at least half the world would do it very tough this day. Now I didn't say it would be all bad , what with kids and parents getting reacquainted, for the first time in years.

You somehow scrape through the day.Again you go to bed and this time you sleep very fitfully after spending all day with your kids for the first time in years. You wake up Wednesday morning wondering with some trepidation at who will fall by the wayside today.

Nothing is immediately apparent until you go to switch on your TV to see which indispensable occupation bit the dust today. But the TV won't switch on. In fact neither will the lights. The casualty this day has been the electrical engineers. No TV, no radio, oh my God no internet!

There is little to do, that you are accustomed to doing, so by 8pm you turn in. You decide on the early evening 'after all it's been a rough couple of days.

Thursday morning arrives and it's a sad day because an old acquaintance had passed away on the Monday. He had arrived at the empty hospital complaining of heart tremors. It was a rushed funeral to say the least and the two days between his death and the funeral service had been made most uncomfortable because of the sudden and mysterious absence of every Funeral Director on the planet. This is getting to much.

Friday now arrives and with the utter chaos that could only ensue through loosing
one highly regarded, well respected and essential occupation after another. By Friday the streets have become no go zones. People have begun to panic wondering whose occupation will be next to go.

The situation of widespread pandemonium is made doubly worse by the sudden disappearance of every single police officer in the world. Chaos abounds.

Saturday comes and again you wake to a situation that has now become intolerable. You had at times during this tumultuous week been awfully inconvenienced, at times frightened and now as you attempt to contemplate brighter things and a better future you begin to get quite depressed. This is very sad for you given that all the worlds clowns, comics and comedians had somehow ceased to exist overnight. How in the world could this possibly get any worse?

As your head hits the pillow on Saturday night you toss and you turn wondering what fate will greet the world tomorrow morning. No sewerage perhaps? Who looks after that stuff anyway? No running water? There's a dam or reservoir guy somewhere who does that kind of thing surely? Or maybe all the zoo keepers will befall the fate of the other professions and wild animals will be roaming the streets in the morning? You finally succumb to sleep with images swirling in your mind of the terrors that may lurk..what if there is no football any more?

    Sunday

Sunday 8 am. You cautiously try the TV set. The electricity is back on. You look out your window and the street seems normal, almost too normal. There is something different but you can't quite work out what it is. People are calm, no one is edgy, it seems everyone is going about their normal business. Its 10 am now and you still haven't figured out what occupation had disappeared overnight. Again you look across the street. Something has changed, but what?

Then it hits you. You are suddenly seized in the grip of a cold primeval fear. A fear that until now you had never felt. A fear so great that your palms sweat as you are hit with the awful realization. The realization that today, today of all days, every real estate agent on the planet is no more!

You suddenly notice the absence of the coloured signs in your street. That was the thing that had unnerved you earlier. The street had been different after all.

Your mind races because your sales inspection is at Midday. What are you to do? Who will greet them, who will make idle chit chat? Will they even find your home now that all the For Sale signs have vanished?

Suddenly in the midst of your anxiety and your fear, something strange happens. An unworldly calm descends over you. You draw a deep breath, you start to think to yourself that you can do this.
    You have all the skills.

    You can open that door.

You can hold a rudimentary conversation with a complete stranger.

    You're gonna do this thing!.

The inspection goes very well and during the weeks ahead you notice strange phenomena taking place. For some unknown reason the agents never returned unlike the doctors. Strangely no madness occurs. No one is seen jumping out of 10 storey apartments because the agents role had vanished.

The market suddenly became buoyant again as people began selling their own home without needing to tack on ten thousand dollars in commissions. Everywhere people became more cheerful, more outgoing. Children played in the streets again.

It was as if the estate agents had never really been needed in the first place??..

Apologies to all the great real estate agents out there. You know who you are.

But the point of this story is very simple ? Selling your own home as a> Real Estate Private Sale is not rocket science. You can do it.
